6 Winter Activities

We’ve got some suggestions for how to brighten up your January… your dog’s too!

Christmas may be over, but things don’t have to be all doom and gloom! The cold weather can be a great opportunity for some bonding activities with your four-legged friend. Let’s have a look…

Toys and treats indoors

We all start to see the inside as something of a fortress during the winter… and this is no bad thing! With the help of toys and treats, you can easily keep your dog active and entertained at home. A puzzle feeder will turn meal or snack time into an activity that will stimulate your dog’s mind as well as their belly.

If you bought your dog some new toys and Christmas presents, now is the time to try them. Bring on indoor fetch or tug of war!

Indoor training

Keep your pooch AND yourself entertained by teaching them a few new tricks. Whether you’re starting off with the basics or your dog is already an expert, there’s bound to be new trick up your sleeve that you can teach them. Just remember to always use positive reinforcement when training your dog.

If tricks aren’t your thing (or your dog’s), try getting them to help out with household chores. Now we’re not seriously suggesting your dog will be able to crack out the hoover or load the dishwasher, but if they are following you about the house, or even just in the room with you, that’s helping as far as they’re concerned.

Time for friends

Who is your dog’s best friend? Perhaps you can organise a puppy playdate. If you’re itching to get out and about, you could have a look at local dog-friendly clubs such as agility training or puppy parties.

Garden games

The best thing about playing out in the garden with your dog is that if it gets too cold, you’re only a short walk away from home. The garden allows your dog to channel their curious side in a safe, familiar environment. After all, there’s only so much indoor time anyone can take…

Walks

Your walks might not be as long during the cold weather, but your dog will still need their exercise. You both might even enjoy the winter – the views certainly can be spectacular.

Just a few things to bear in mind when walking your dog in the winter:

  • They might need a cosy winter jacket
  • Remove salt, grit and snow from their paws afterwards
  • Watch out for icy patches
  • Keep your dog on the lead when you’re next to slippy areas
  • Try to walk during daylight hours
  • Consider reflective clothing if you’re walking in the dark
  • Keep an eye on your pooch at all times

Snuggles

Last but not least, and perhaps everyone’s favourite winter activity. Whether you’re a human or a dog, cuddles in front of the fire are just what you need after a walk in the cold weather!
