Mj came into our Llanelli practice after her owners noticed a change in her weight. After performing some blood tests the vet diagnosed Mj with hyperthyroidism!
Hyperthyroidism is a condition we commonly see in middle aged and older cats when the thyroid glands produce too much thyroid hormone.
Typically, signs will include weight loss despite an increased appetite, hyperactivity, increased thirst / urination and sometimes breathing problems due to secondary heart disease. Hyperthyroidism will be diagnosed with a simple blood test.
There are several different treatment options available with the most suitable being decided based on each individual patients circumstances. These include tablet and liquid medications, surgery to remove the thyroid gland, radioactive iodine (at a specialist centre) or a special diet. The prognosis for those treated is good and can live normal lives whilst the condition is under control.
